When Responsibility Doesn’t Pay

February 28th, 2010

Welfare always breeds contempt…

NRO
by Mark Steyn

Mark SteynWhile Barack Obama was making his latest pitch for a brand-new, even-more-unsustainable entitlement at the health-care “summit,” thousands of Greeks took to the streets to riot. An enterprising cable network might have shown the two scenes on a continuous split-screen — because they’re part of the same story. It’s just that Greece is a little further along in the plot: They’re at the point where the canoe is about to plunge over the falls. America is farther upstream and can still pull for shore, but has decided instead that what it needs to do is catch up with the Greek canoe. Chapter One (the introduction of unsustainable entitlements) leads eventually to Chapter Twenty (total societal collapse): The Greeks are at Chapter Seventeen or Eighteen.

What’s happening in the developed world today isn’t so very hard to understand: The 20th-century Bismarckian welfare state has run out of people to stick it to. In America, the feckless, insatiable boobs in Washington, Sacramento, Albany, and elsewhere are screwing over our kids and grandkids. In Europe, they’ve reached the next stage in social-democratic evolution: There are no kids or grandkids to screw over. The United States has a fertility rate of around 2.1 — or just over two kids per couple. Greece has a fertility rate of about 1.3: Ten grandparents have six kids have four grandkids — ie, the family tree is upside down. Demographers call 1.3 “lowest-low” fertility — the point from which no society has ever recovered. And, compared to Spain and Italy, Greece has the least worst fertility rate in Mediterranean Europe.

So you can’t borrow against the future because, in the most basic sense, you don’t have one. Greeks in the public sector retire at 58, which sounds great. But, when ten grandparents have four grandchildren, who pays for you to spend the last third of your adult life loafing around?

By the way, you don’t have to go to Greece to experience Greek-style retirement: The Athenian “public service” of California has been metaphorically face down in the ouzo for a generation. Still, America as a whole is not yet Greece. A couple of years ago, when I wrote my book America Alone, I put the then–Social Security debate in a bit of perspective: On 2005 figures, projected public-pensions liabilities were expected to rise by 2040 to about 6.8 percent of GDP. In Greece, the figure was 25 percent: in other words, head for the hills, Armageddon outta here, The End. Since then, the situation has worsened in both countries. And really the comparison is academic: Whereas America still has a choice, Greece isn’t going to have a 2040 — not without a massive shot of Reality Juice.

Is that likely to happen? At such moments, I like to modify Gerald Ford. When seeking to ingratiate himself with conservative audiences, President Ford liked to say: “A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you have.” Which is true enough. But there’s an intermediate stage: A government big enough to give you everything you want isn’t big enough to get you to give any of it back. That’s the point Greece is at. Its socialist government has been forced into supporting a package of austerity measures. The Greek people’s response is: Nuts to that. Public-sector workers have succeeded in redefining time itself: Every year, they receive 14 monthly payments. You do the math. And for about seven months’ work: For many of them, the work day ends at 2:30 p.m. And, when they retire, they get 14 monthly pension payments. In other words: Economic reality is not my problem. I want my benefits. And, if it bankrupts the entire state a generation from now, who cares as long as they keep the checks coming until I croak?

We hard-hearted small-government guys are often damned as selfish types who care nothing for the general welfare. But, as the Greek protests make plain, nothing makes an individual more selfish than the socially equitable communitarianism of big government: Once a chap’s enjoying the fruits of government health care, government-paid vacation, government-funded early retirement, and all the rest, he couldn’t give a hoot about the general societal interest; he’s got his, and to hell with everyone else. People’s sense of entitlement endures long after the entitlement has ceased to make sense.

The perfect spokesman for the entitlement mentality is the deputy prime minister of Greece. The European Union has concluded that the Greek government’s austerity measures are insufficient and, as a condition of bailout, has demanded something more robust. Greece is no longer a sovereign state: It’s General Motors, and the EU is Washington, and the Greek electorate is happy to play the part of the UAW — everything’s on the table except anything that would actually make a difference. In practice, because Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Ireland are also on the brink of the abyss, a “European” bailout will be paid for by Germany. So the aforementioned Greek deputy prime minister, Theodoros Pangalos, has denounced the conditions of the EU deal on the grounds that the Germans stole all the bullion from the Bank of Greece during the Second World War. Welfare always breeds contempt, in nations as much as inner-city housing projects: How dare you tell us how to live! Just give us your money and push off.

Unfortunately, Germany is no longer an economic powerhouse. As Angela Merkel pointed out a year ago, for Germany, an Obama-sized stimulus was out of the question simply because its foreign creditors know there are not enough young Germans around ever to repay it. Over 30 percent of German women are childless; among German university graduates, it’s over 40 percent. And for the ever-dwindling band of young Germans who make it out of the maternity ward, there’s precious little reason to stick around. Why be the last handsome blond lederhosen-clad Aryan lad working the late shift at the beer garden in order to prop up singlehandedly entire retirement homes? And that’s before the EU decides to add the Greeks to your burdens. Germans, who retire at 67, are now expected to sustain the unsustainable 14 monthly payments per year of Greeks who retire at 58.

Think of Greece as California: Every year an irresponsible and corrupt bureaucracy awards itself higher pay and better benefits paid for by an ever-shrinking wealth-generating class. And think of Germany as one of the less profligate, still-just-about-functioning corners of America such as my own state of New Hampshire: Responsibility doesn’t pay. You’ll wind up bailing out anyway. The problem is there are never enough of “the rich” to fund the entitlement state, because in the end it disincentivizes everything from wealth creation to self-reliance to the basic survival instinct, as represented by the fertility rate. In Greece, they’ve run out Greeks, so they’ll stick it to the Germans, like French farmers do. In Germany, the Germans have only been able to afford to subsidize French farming because they stick their defense tab to the Americans. And in America, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are saying we need to paddle faster to catch up with the Greeks and Germans. What could go wrong?

Enjoy your Sunday.. it is loaded with propaganda if you listen to the MSM. I have to laugh when Soros said that Obama saved the country from recession. Obama couldn’t save a rat’s ass from starvation much less lead this country out of its current financial woes. Folks, people like George Soros truly believe their own BS.

Heres the story from of the Orlando, FL newspaper, the Sentinel:

“Are you satisfied with the job Barack Obama has done?”

Soros said he wasn’t. Soros wanted the banks nationalized, but added that Obama “made the political decision that that is un-American, will not be accepted.”

Yet Soros had praise for Obama’s overall leadership.

“He is paying a very heavy price for actually saving the country from going into a very deep recession or a depression, because people don’t — haven’t experienced it,” Soros said.

“He wanted to be the great uniter and he wanted to carry the country, sort of bring it together. But the other side has absolutely no incentive to do it. So it takes two to tango. So that approach has failed.”

But Obama “got the message” when Massachusetts elected Scott Brown, a Republican, as Ted Kennedy’s successor, Soros said.

“I hope that, actually, now, he’s [Obama's] taking the health care back to Congress and overcoming the filibuster — the 60 percent vote requirement,” Soros said. “I think that’s the right reaction. So he’s sort of taking a tough stance. And that may be the turning point. It depends on how he follows it up.”

Here’s a couple of quotes from Adolf Hitler:

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.

How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.

Now go back and re-read what Soros just tried to pass off as truth.. :-)

pelosiWASHINGTON (AP) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is questioning whether the conservative “tea party” coalition truly represents a grass-roots movement.

In a broadcast interview, Pelosi calls tea party voters the “astroturf” movement. She says many of those voters have good intentions but that the Republican Party has hijacked the movement for its gain.

The San Francisco Democrat says the tea party coalition shares some common ground with Democrats, such as their dislike of special interests in Washington. She cited public disdain for the recent Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance that allows companies and unions to spend freely on ads that promote or target particular candidates by name.

Comment by American Grand Jury:

The Democrats are desperate. They are cranking up the propaganda mills trying to get the patriots to back off. Ain’t going to happen. Pelosi doesn’t have a clue what is coming her way. The Tea Party movement is going to bury her and the Democrats and yes, even those Republicans that get in their way.

The Tea Parties are embarrassed to talk about it. Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly do their level best to discount it. John McCain hopes to the cross the isle one more time with voters by denying it. Ninety percent of the Congress all quote FactCheck.org to get around it. The State of Hawaii builds websites to mask it. Barack Obama continues to spent a fortune to make the legal system bury it.

So what is so controversial about the BIRTHER movement that makes everyone get so defensive? Controversy never stopped our society before. The liberals have openly spent years hating Bush, Iraq and the military. The socialists in this country have spent decades pushing racism and bashing capitalism. Nothing is sacred ground in America. Abortion, amnesty, God, terrorism, corporate greed, gun control, gay rights, pornography and drugs are all big-time events today. Yet God forbid, someone mentions the birther issue and the gears completely grind to a halt.

Could it just be that decades of liberal progressive hatred, corruption and evil are totally at risk if someone spills the beans about Barack Obama? We aren’t just talking about a simple citizenship issue here, we are talking about an entire 45 year history of deception, coverup and conspiracy. How many countless names and reputations are at risk? How many institutions and powerful money brokers helped fabricate the lies that turned a ghost into a real life image? Are people prepared for the fact that Barack Obama could literally be an honest to goodness Manchurian candidate?

Based on the what has transpired in the last 12 months it is more than obvious that something is desperately wrong. Everything stinks from the bottom up. Judge after judge continue to deny standing to credible lawsuits. One person we know of has been killed trying to uncover passport records for Obama. Individuals that openly challenge Obama are violently attacked in the press and Internet media as right-wing crazies. Any public official that questions Obama’s credentials is mocked and laughed at.

Now those that think this issue is going to go away are sadly mistaken. America loves a mystery and the facts surrounding Barack Obama just don’t add up. As more and more people begin to question the truth, the fire gets hotter and the flames continue to spread. So far only arrogance and denial have saved Obama. Such conduct has its limitations however. The truth is almost impossible to hide if people really want to get at it. We believe the writing is on the wall. Obama cannot withstand the onslaught that is heading right for him. People are sick and damn tired of putting up with his world of corruption. We are at the point in time where Obama is going to come clean or the American patriot will hand him his head on the proverbial silver platter. I believe Obama knows it too. You can actually see the stress and uneasiness in his demeanor and walk these days.

So where does that leave organizations like American Grand Jury who have sounded the “birther” alarm since day one? It makes us stronger and more determined than ever. Say what you want about American Grand Jury but we have never backed off from our mission. That mission is to see Barack Obama legally removed from office for the fraud and treason he has committed against the people of the United States. For those of you that believe Obama is innocent all you have to do is convince your Messiah to come forward and prove us wrong. At this point in time any refusal by you to demand the truth only adds to the turmoil and furthers the presumption of guilt on the part of Barack Obama.

Top Cop Says McCain Was Never Tortured
Former Vietnam vet with top secret clearance - Republican frontrunner is “a lying skunk”

mccain the liarA former Vietnam veteran with top secret clearance says he has personally spoken to numerous POW’s who dispute John McCain’s claim that he refused to provide information after he was captured and tortured in Hanoi, saying that in fact McCain’s code-name was “Songbird” because of his willingness to tell all to avoid torture.

Jack McLamb served nine years in secret operations in Cambodia and other nations before going on to become one of the most highly decorated police officer’s in Phoenix history, winning police officer of the year twice before taking a role as a hostage negotiator for the FBI.

“I know a lot of Vietnam veterans and a few POW’s and all the POW’s that I’ve talked to over the years say that John McCain is a lying skunk,” McLamb told the Alex Jones Show.

“He never was tortured - they were there in the camp with him and then when he came in….he immediately started spilling his guts about everything because he didn’t want to get tortured,” said McLamb, contradicting the official story that McCain only offered his name, rank, serial number, and date of birth.

“The Vietnamese Communists called him the Songbird, that’s his code name, Songbird McCain, because he just came into the camp singing and telling them everything they wanted to know,” said McLamb.

McLamb said the POW’s told him that McCain had sustained two broken arms and a leg injury from not pulling his arms in when he bailed out of his A-4 Skyhawk that was shot down over the Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi.

The POW’s said that McCain made 32 propaganda videos for the communist North Vietnamese in which he denounced America for what they were doing in Vietnam.

“They have these sealed now, our government has these sealed, we can’t get to it, they have it classified,” said McLamb, adding that in truth “the POW’s hate John McCain.”
